Historic Australians: Simpson Newland, (1835-1925)
pioneer and author
In 1864 Newland took up station life on the Darling in New South Wales some 50 miles from Wilcannia, and became more and more interested in the aborigines and the natural history of the country.
At the end of 1876 he bought a home near Adelaide but continued to manage his stations. He entered the legislative assembly in 1881 as member for Encounter Bay, and soon afterwards brought in a measure to build a north to south railway.

1833 - As a result of the Emancipation Act abolishing slavery throughout the British Colonies, 20 Million Dollars was voted as compensation to slave-owners.
1844 - Report of select commitee says that 50% of children in N.S.W. aged between 4-14 are not being educated.
1888 - 1st meeting of the Australasia Association for Advancement of Science in Sydney.
1891 - S.S. Gambier sinks after colliding with S.S. Easby in Port Phillip Bay.
1916 - The N.S.W. Government Aviation School was officially opened at Richmond.
1923 - Work began on the construction of Parliament House in Canberra.
1928 - Local Government Bill Act amended to allow Municipalities to charge parking fines.
1941 - Sir Robert Menzies resigns as Prime Minister, and was replaced by Fadden.
