Edward Abbott ( 1772-1884 ) N.s.w Corps Captain
arrived in the colony 1790, served initially on Norfolk Island. In 1801, with Lieut John MACARTHUR, he was involved in an assault case in which a Lieut MARSHALL was convicted by a court of 6 officers. Convinced this trial was unfair Gov. KING tried to introduce civilians into courts, arousing MACARTHUR'S violent antipathy. In 1807 Abbott & MACARTHUR imported two stills, Gov BLIGH'S order to return them to England angered colonists sowing seeds of RUM REBELLION. In 1808 ABBOT was one of magistrates appointed to try MACARTHUR though he himself took part in the rebellion. In 1810 he went to England as witness to George JOHNSTON'S court martial. He replaced Richard ATKINS as Judge Advocate in Tas, later serving as civil commandant at Launceston.
