Charles was tried at Southwark in Surrey on the 16th of February 1785 for unknown reasons.
Charles was sentenced to transportation for 7 years and left England with the first fleet on board the Alexander.
His occupation was not recorded.
Charles was in repeated trouble during his stay in the colony receiving a total of 900 lashes for for offences committed in the new colony.
In August of 1788, he received 500 lashes and was forced to work in irons for stealing pork.

On 24th of October 1789, he received 100 lashes for insolence.
On 24th of May 1791, 100 lashes for neglect of duty.
On 27th of October 1791, 100 lashes for neglect of orders and 100 lashes for stealing cash from a soldier.
Recorded as "on charity" in 1814.
