James was tried at Croydon in Surrey on the 20th of July 1785, for stealing bags of saltpetre worth 65 shillings.
His partner Samuel BIRD was also tried for this crime. James was sentenced to transportation for 7 years.
James left England with the first fleet on board the Alexander.
On 20th of July 1789, James was sentenced to receive 100 lashes for stealing fish.
James's occupation was recorded as labourer.
