James was tried at the Old Bailey in London on the 7th of January 1784, for stealing a coat worth 10 shillings. James was sentenced to transportation for 7 years and left England with the first fleet on board the Alexander. James had no occupation recorded. Partner in the original crime was George Barland. James received 25 lashes on 26th of January 1789 for being out of quarters.
