John was tried at the Old Bailey in London on the 14th of December 1785, for stealing a 'trunk of clothing' worth 39 shillings.
He was sentenced to transportation for a period of 7 years leaving England with the first fleet on the Alexander, aged about 20 years old.
He had no occupation recorded.
The actual value of the goods stolen was 150 shillings but John was only tried for 39 of them.
His partner in the original crime was John Cropper.
