John was tried at Maidstone in the county of Kent on the 11th of July 1785, for stealing a silver watch, steel chain and brass key worth 40 shillings.
John was sentenced to transportation for 7 years. He left England with the first fleet on board the Alexander.
While John was supposed to be at work he went out looking for greens and got lost in the bush.

He was sentenced to 100 lashes for getting lost but John only ever received 50 of them.
In June 1790 John stole several pounds of sugar and was sentenced to another 200 lashes however there is no record of him receiving them.
John's occupation was listed as labourer. After his release, he became an approved baker.
