John was tried at the Old Bailey in London on the 8th of December 1784, for robbery worth 2 shillings.
Robert was sentenced to transportation for 7 years. He left England with the first fleet on board the Alexander.
John's occupation was listed as master butcher. He was described as 'very insolent and troublesome'.

In 1792 John was ordered to receive 800 lashes for stealing flour from his employer. He was to be given 25 lashes every Saturday. He received 150 lashes over the next 6 weeks and was then made to work in double irons.
In May 1792, he received a further 400 lashes for 'stirring up trouble'.
