Ottiwell was tried at Preston in Lancashire on the 16th of October 1785, for stealing a silver watch of unknown value.
Ottiwell was sentenced to transportation for 7 years. He left England with the first fleet on board the Alexander.

On the 21st of June 1790, Ottiwell's rations were reduced to ¼ pound of flour per day for 1 month for neglect of duty.
