Thomas was tried at Northallerton in Yorkshire on the 5th of April 1785 for stealing clothing worth 3 shillings.
Thomas was sentenced to transportation for 7 years and left England with the first fleet on board the Alexander.

His occupation was listed as a labourer.
On 12th of January 1789 he was sentenced to 200 lashes for 'assisting the late Thomas Saunderson with provisions'.
Thomas seems to have only received 50 of the 200 lashes he was sentenced to.
