Captain Melville, was an infamous bushranger, robber, thief and murderer. Active in the central Victorian region during the 1850's.

The most famous gold find on this field was the "Blanche Barkly" in 1857 it weighed some 49.5kg. It’s reputed that gold still remains in the area and brings great excitement and pleasure to the finders who visit these fields. Rumor has it that the gold Captain Melville stole, is still buried, somewhere in the vicinity of his rocky mountain hideout. The cave area provided Captain Melville with panoramic views of the close surroundings and far beyond.
