Visit significant sites in central Victoria’s early history, following some important steps of Major Mitchell and his company, they were the first European’s to explore Mt Alexandra. You’ll find it’s a great day out for the whole family!
Entry/Admission to Mount Alexandra is absolutely free.
We graded the walking tracks here as easy to moderate, with a choice of tracks that were properly signposted. We also found that, it would be easy to spend 4-hours or longer exploring the park at leisurely pace.

Sir, Major, Thomas Mitchell Surveyor-General of New South Wales, his assistant Surveyor Granville Stapylton and the 22 Convicts that accompanied them, were the first Europeans to climb the mountain which, the DjaDjaWrung Aboriginals called Leanganuc/Leanganook.
The 1836 Expedition was Mitchell’s third expedition into Australia’s interior. Reflecting on the view from Pyramid Hill, Mitchell wrote in his diary: "As I stood, the intruder on the sublime solitude of these verdant plains as yet untouched by flocks and herds, I felt conscious of being the harbinger of mighty changes there; for our steps would soon be followed by men and animals for which it seemed prepared." On his return from Australia, Mitchell wrote glowing reports about what he referred to as "Paradise" Australia Felix.
